A STUDY OTO OBTAIN INDIVIDUAL INFORMATION ABOUT A SELECTED GROUP OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS FROM WHICH INFERENCES COULD BE MADE FOR CURRICULUM PLANNING.
Abstract
INFORMATION ABOUT THE STUDENTS STUDIED WAS GAINED FROM ANSWERS TO SPECIFIC QUESTIONS WHICH WERE BASED ON CATEGORIES OF INFORMATION DESIRED. SOURCES OF INFORMATION WERE CONFINED TO AN INTERVIEW WITH EACH OF EIGHTEEN DELINQUENT STUDENTS AND WITH ONE OF THE STUDENT'S TEACHERS. THE STUDY OF THE STUDENTS' PERFORMANCES IN SCHOOL IN ACADEMIC AREAS WAS LIMITED TO THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING AND WRITING. A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE PERTINENT TO THE INVESTIGATION IS PRESENTED. A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROCEDURES AND METHODOLOGY USED BY THE INVESTIGATOR, ALONG WITH THE POPULATION AND INSTRUMENTS FOR GATHERING THE DATA, ARE PRESENTED. ONE OF THE MAJOR FINDINGS OF THE STUDY SHOWED A LACK OF DIALOGUE BETWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THAT WOULD LEAD TO JOINT CURRICULUM PLANNING ON THE BASIS OF STUDENT INTERESTS AND BROADER SOCIAL NEEDS. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT TEACHERS GAIN ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON STUDENTS THROUGH SOCIOMETRIC DEVICES, CASE CONFERENCES, OPEN-ENDED CLASS INTERVIEWS, PERSONAL INTERVIEWS. AUTOBIOGRAPHIES, RECORDS OF THEMES, AND STANDARDIZED INSTRUMENTS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT TEACHERS PLAN WITH STUDENTS WAYS IN WHICH THE STUDENTS MAY BE HELPED IN SCHOOL. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE CURRICULUM FOR THE DELINQUENTS INCLUDE DEVELOPMENTAL AND REMEDIAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES IN THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS OF LISTENING, SPEAKING, READING, AND WRITING.
