The structure of this report on the Japanese prison system is an anecdotal representation of the author's observations while touring two prison facilities in Japan.
Abstract
Comparison of crime figures are provided, and Japanese approaches to probation and parole are discussed. Prison population statistics as well as characteristics of the Japanese criminal justice system are described. The author provides illustrations and descriptions of the prison design and structure at Fuchu, a men's prison, and at Tochigi, a woman's prison. The Japanese view of the American prison is also provided.
