Abstract
Two papers on research issues explore the prevalence and nature of substance abuse among Asian/Pacific Islander Americans and the association between criminal activity and the use of alcohol and cocaine derivatives by multi-ethnic gang members. Three papers on legal and policy issues address violence prevention under the public health model, the impact of gangs and drugs in the community, and public policy approaches to alcohol- related problems as manifested in the Los Angeles County "Community Model." Prevention and intervention strategies are discussed in two papers that focus on the mitigation of the impact of gang violence and a clinical model for the prevention of gang violence and homicide. Three papers discuss issues that pertain to the needs of the survivors of gang violence. The topics addressed are the psychological effects of exposure to gang violence, survivors' response to gang violence, and a working typology of grief among homicide survivors victimized by gangs.
