This Source Book provides data on substance abuse and mental disorders to help inform both the public and interested educators, practitioners, policymakers, and researchers.
Abstract
The book contains 217 two-page fact sheets concerning, among other topics: (1) cost to the public for accidents caused by drinking drivers; (2) the prevalence of major depression experienced by individuals ages 15 to 54; (3) the percent of the U.S. population who have experienced a serious mental illness; (4) the increase or decrease in alcohol-related traffic fatalities since 1982; (5) AIDS cases associated with injecting drug use; (6) occupation categories with the highest rates of illicit drug use; (7) the percentage of individuals with a mental disorder who were assaulted as children; (8) the percentage of those convicted of crimes who were under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol at the time of their offense; (9) the impact of substance abuse on preventable death; (10) the economic costs of anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and other mental disorders; (11) the nature, extent, and trends of substance abuse and mental disorders; (12) prevention, treatment, and other intervention programs; and (13) studies and survey descriptions.
