This preliminary guide to aid company security managers in the establishment of a drug-free workplace focuses on facts and statistics that can be used to justify a workplace anti-substance abuse program.
Abstract
Statistics and facts cover drug use in the general population, general use by drug, the cost of substance abuse to business and society, the cost of alcohol and alcoholism to business, and a cost-benefit analysis of alcohol revenue to a Nation versus the cost incurred because of consumption. A section on substance abuse in the workplace presents factual quotes regarding drug abuse in the workplace in general, in aviation, in trucking and among commercial motor carriers, among railroad employees, and in the retail industry. A case study of drug use in the transportation industry is included. Other facts and statistics address the substance abuse orientation of Employee Assistance Programs, employee drug testing, and drug testing laboratories. One section of resources provides the names, addresses, phone numbers, and brief descriptions of organizations and training aids relevant to the establishment of an anti-substance abuse program in the workplace. The listing covers toll-free and other phone numbers, Federal Government agencies, State agencies, nongovernmental agencies, and training aids (audio tapes, videos and films, and posters and kits). Selective reading lists and appended relevant sample laws and regulations
