Abstract

Each module is designed to present a reasonable balance of knowledge-based information, case-based problem-solving, and suggested opportunities and methods for practicing appropriate clinical skills. The first module focuses on chemical dependence and the role of the primary care physician. The second model deals with tools for screening and diagnosing alcohol and drug dependence in the ambulatory setting. Specific topics covered in the modules include societal belief systems about chemical dependence, various models for treating addiction, and mood-altering substance abuse versus substance dependence. In particular, a neurobehavioral model of alcohol dependence is described. Chemical dependence screening and diagnosis tools and methods are reviewed, along with typical chemical dependence relapse patterns and pharmacotherapy. References, tables, and figures
