Hispanic youth, identified as a high-risk group in substance abuse, are targeted in national prevention strategies outlined in this survey report which includes a directory of resources for program development.
Abstract
Drug and alcohol abuse among Hispanics is summarized from the 1985 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse, the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 1982-1984, and other regional studies. Growing awareness in Hispanic communities of substance abuse as a community, rather than an individual, problem allows policymakers to promote prevention programs. It is recommended that the strategy for change include a community approach with a family orientation and coordinated prevention, early intervention, and treatment. The programs should increase information resources, increase parental and other family member knowledge and involvement, increase programming for school personnel, and encourage development and funding of demonstration projects. An annotated directory of related organizations is included.
