Abstract
The book provides a ready reference to specific topics and a text for persons interested in the full scope of issues related to substance abuse. It includes basic concepts important to understanding how certain substances work and how problems related to excessive use of these substances are addressed. The initial section discusses commonly used terms in the field and the biomedical aspects of addiction. The book considers the major substances of abuse in order to set the stage for a review of evaluations and treatments. These treatments include psychosocial, pharmacological and medical-model approaches. The book also addresses policy issues related to drugs in the workplace, drugs and the law, prevention and education, and special populations and special considerations for people new to alcoholism and drug abuse treatment.
