For 5 years, the Maternity and Infant Care Resource Mothers Project at the University of Florida has successfully implemented a model program designed to meet the needs of pregnant, postpartum, and preconceptional substance abusing women in Putnam County, Florida, in a personal way.
Abstract
The project was developed as part of a multi-county prenatal care delivery system to offer community-based, family-centered outreach using a specially trained team of paraprofessional home visitors. Backed by an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, the project offers personal support to women in their homes to help them achieve sobriety. Successes, achievements, and challenges of the project are documented. Descriptive and quantitative information about the project are provided, and a personal perspective on the impact of the project on women and children is offered. The project setting, the project approach, the women served, project results and outcomes, project costs and benefits, and lessons learned are detailed. Figures and photographs
