This book brings together the leading research and clinical practice on adolescent suicide and provides school personnel, especially psychologists, counselors, and social workers, with the resources they need to identify and help potentially suicidal youth.
Abstract
In addition to presenting an overview of the suicidal youth problem, the authors describe how to evaluate an adolescent to determine suicide potential. Further, they outline what should be done if an individual is suspected of being a danger to himself or herself. Materials for setting up a model suicide awareness school program are provided, and legal and ethical issues surrounding student suicide are discussed. Advice is offered on how schools can collaborate more effectively with outside agencies to detect and prevent possible suicides among adolescents. A resource section contains a guide to films, filmstrips, and videotapes on suicide. Also included are lists of pamphlets, State and school district manuals on suicide prevention, national organizations, and suggested fiction and nonfiction readings on suicide for children and young adults. Book chapters specifically examine suicide prediction, suicide potential, intervention, screening for students at risk, educating the school community, involving peers in suicide prevention, and making institutions sensitive to suicide. 342 references, 7 tables, 4 figures, and 2 exhibits
