AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE NEED FOR THESE SERVICES AND A REVIEW OF PERTINENT LITERATURE IS PROVIDED. A SURVEY WAS EMPLOYED WHICH REQUESTED BASIC INFORMATION ON METHOD OF OPERATION, TELEPHONE SET-UP, TELEPHONE COVERAGE, CONTACT WITH CALLERS, SPONSORS AND FUNDING, STAFFING, TRAINING, PUBLICITY, GOALS AND PURPOSES, AND FOLLOW-UP OF CALLERS. INFORMATION WAS ALSO SOLICITED ON LENGTH OF TIME IN OPERATION, RECORD KEEPING, AND PROBLEM AREAS. THE QUESTIONNAIRE WAS SENT TO A THREE-WAY CROSSINDEXED LIST OF KNOWN SERVICES. RESPONDENTS WERE DIVIDED ACCORDING TO THE FOCUS OF THEIR SERVICES AND DATA WERE COMPILED AND TABULATED FOR 142 SUICIDE PREVENTION CENTERS AND 50 YOUTH SERVICES. RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ON RESEARCH, SHARING AND DISEMINATION OF INFORMATION, AND USE OF VOLUNTEERS ARE PROVIDED. THE APPENDIXES INCLUDE A LIST OF ASSOCIATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS, THE SURVEY INSTRUMENT, SAMPLE FORMS USED BY THESE SERVICES, AND A BRIEF SUGGESTED LIST OF MATERIAL FOR TRAINING.
