This pamphlet provides a resource for training persons involved in the arrest, intake, reception, supervision, and care of minors in detention and treatment facilities to recognize suicide-prone individuals, deal with them in humane and effective ways, and to implement specific operational procedures in response to attempted suicides.
Abstract
Since most county-administered facilities for juvenile offenders in California already have suicide prevention programming, the material should also help assess the completeness and adequacy of procedures already in place. The discussion deals with four major topical categories; identification, procedural factors, structural factors, and personnel training. The text of the Monterey County Juvenile Hall Emergency Procedures regarding suicidal and emotional problems is appended. Sample forms, checklists, and a training program outline are also appended.
