This manual for California's school suicide prevention program contains an implementation and resource guide, a lesson guide for grades 9-12, a guide for staff awareness in service training, and a guide for parent awareness meetings.
Abstract
The implementation and resource guide contains resource materials and explains how to use the program materials, organize a suicide prevention program for the school, and develop a suicide prevention policy for a school. The five-lesson suicide prevention curriculum is designed to help students better understand and deal with stress, depression, despair, or suicidal feelings in themselves or others. It also intends to enhance students' ability to respond to peers who seek their help by teaching them skills such as how to communicate effectively with a suicidal friend and how to find resources available in the school and community to help that friend. The guide for staff awareness inservice training provides resource materials and instruction to educate school staff about the problem of youth suicide, its causes, warning signs, how to help at-risk students, and the nature of the school prevention program. The guide for parent awareness meetings parallels the material in the staff awareness guide but with emphasis on the parental role in helping prevent youth suicide. Each section contains references and subject index.
