Abstract
During this year, 44,400 people began a probation order which accounted for just over half of all criminal court order supervisions. This was the highest ever figure and 3 percent higher than the previous year. The number of people who began a community service order rose sharply to 37,500 following falls in both 1988 and 1989. This was the highest figure since 1985, the peak year, and increased by 10 percent higher over 1989. The number of young offenders beginning supervision in 1990 fell by 18 percent to total just over 13,500. Caseload figures also showed a fall to 10,700 which was 11 percent fewer than in 1989. Of these, 3,700 were being supervised post-release in the community. Persons beginning voluntary after-care also fell, by 16 percent, to under 24,000. The number of people who began supervision by the probation service in 1990 totalled 127,000 compared to 131,000 in 1989 -- 3 percent fewer. Reports of both criminal and domestic inquiries increased in number slightly over 1989, but the number of social inquiry reports prepared fell. 7 tables and 6 figures
