Probation data from England and Wales for 1996 revealed that 48,000 people started a probation order in 1996, the same number as 1995 and that court orders handled by the probation service rose 2 percent to 115,000, the highest level ever.
Abstract
The 46,000 people starting a community service order in 1996 was 6 percent less than in 1995. Seventeen thousand persons started combination orders, an increase of 15 percent over the 14,800 in 1995. The number of probation officers declined to 7,300 at the end of 1996, the lowest number since 1991. The number of money-payment supervision increased by 88 percent in 1996. The total of 6,000 of these orders was the highest number since 1990. Overall, 60 percent of sentences at crown court and 9.5 percent of sentences in magistrates' courts involved prison sentences.
