This summary presents basic information about available options for promoting and protecting various fundamental human rights and freedoms at the international or regional level as specified in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenants on Human Rights.
Abstract
Some of these options are described including both formal procedures and the forwarding of information informally to intergovernmental or nongovernmental organizations. In some instances, the international body can take action, but, in other cases, the international body may serve primarily as a forum in which to publicize and bring concerns to the attention of the international community. Brief descriptions are provided of United Nations' bodies, bodies created to supervise the implementation of treaties at international and regional levels, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and nongovernmental organizations. Also included are sources for further information necessary to determine whether and how to obtain recourse to a particular procedure or organization.
