Abstract
The 1984 data focus on reports and clearances for Penal Code offenses of homicide, robbery, bodily injury, larceny, sex offenses, arson, traffic violations, and violations of special laws. Trend data, spanning the period from 1946-1985 but concentrating on 1980-1984, cover prosecution, trial, corrections and rehabilitation (probation, parole, supervision) of adults and juveniles. Breakdowns also are given for special classes of offenders, including the mentally disordered, the elderly, and females. In 1984, the number of penal code offenses reported to police increased 2 percent over 1983, while clearances decreased .2 percent. Trends over the past 5 years indicate increases in property and traffic offenses and homicides and decreases in sexual offenses. Although juvenile offenses show an overall increase since 1978, the 1984 rate decreased relative to the 1983 rate. Shoplifting and larceny accounted for 78 percent of juvenile offenses in 1984. Special initiatives in recidivism prevention and public participation are discussed. 139 pages of figures and tables.
