CONSIDERS THAT PARTICIPANTS AND SUPERVISORS RECEIVED NEW MOTIVATION, LEARNING, AND MANAGEMENT APPROACHES APPLICABLE IN THEIR OWN WORK ENVIRONMENT.
Abstract
PHASE I OF THE INSTITUTE CONSISTED OF A THREE-DAY PRECONFERENCE SESSION WITH SUPERVISORS OF THE PARTICIPANTS TO DRAW UP THE TYPE OF PROGRAM THEY WANTED THEIR PARTICIPANTS TO RECEIVE. THE CULMINATION OF PHASE I WAS A THREE-WEEK TRAINING OF PARTICIPANTS IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS, MANAGEMENT STYLES, CURRENT TOPICS IN CORRECTIONS, AND MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATIVE TECHNIQUES. PHASE II WAS A SEVEN MONTH PERIOD IN WHICH PARTICIPANTS WORKED ON PROJECTS IN THEIR HOME AGENCIES. PHASE III INVOLVED A RECONVENING OF PARTICIPANTS FOR A WEEK TO DISCUSS THEIR PROJECTS, ADDITIONAL TOPICS OF INTEREST, QUESTIONNAIRES, AND A SURVEY OF PARTICIPANTS. THEIR SUPERVISORS AND TRAINED OBSERVERS INDICATED AN OVERALL POSITIVE FEELING THAT RELEVANT GROWTH AND KNOWLEDGE HAD OCCURRED. SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING THE FORMAT INCLUDED FORMULATING THE TRAINING CONTENT FROM TRAINEE NEEDS AND DISCUSSIONS AND AN INTERFACE OF TRAINEES WITH COMMUNITY AGENCIES, CLIENT FAMILIES, AND EX-OFFENDERS.
