Statistical information reflecting activities of the Department of Public Safety of Sunnyvale, Calif., during calendar year 1980 are presented in this annual report; police and fire department services are included.
Abstract
This year the department was staffed by 188 uniform personnel, 34 civilian personnel, and 30 temporary personnel. The population of the 23-square mile city was 105,596 at yearend. Calls for service from the police and fire departments totaled 62,886, an increase of 4 percent over 1979. Adult arrests totaled 2,943, and juvenile arrests numbered 1,762. Citations issued for parking and moving violations totaled 21,184; traffic accidents reported during the year numbered 2,715. Regarding fire department activities, 708 fires were reported, and 9,538 fire prevention inspections were conducted. Monetary losses from fires were $3,521,286 for the year. Part I classification crimes (murder and rape) resulted in 1,410 arrests. Part II classification crimes resulted in the arrest of 3,064 persons. The crime index total for part I crimes per 100,000 population was 6,752.8. The fire department provided rescue services, such as first aid and resuscitator assistance, in 3,227 instances throughout the year. Analysis of monetary losses sustained during this period reveals that traffic accidents and related damage accounted for 57 percent of all losses, crime accounted for 19 percent of the total and fire for 24 percent. Of the 12,093 reported offenses, 11,890 offenses actually occured. Of the total number of offenses, 3,149 were cleared by arrest; 1,177 were committed by juveniles.
