This article describes the specifications and uses of the Super Talon net gun from Advanced Weapons Technology.
Abstract
The D-cell, flashlight-shaped launcher fires a 16-foot-diameter nylon net out to a range of approximately 40 feet, surrounding, containing, and incapacitating a threatening or fleeing suspect. Its most effective range is between 15 and 35 feet. This distance exceeds that for many less-lethal options, which are restricted to a 7- to 21-foot range. Only impact munitions are effective at longer ranges, but they do not have the capture capability of the Super Talon. The net deploys at 22 feet per second, slowing down as it spreads out down range. The Super Talon is pointed in the general direction of the suspect and shot from the hip. Testing has shown that the best point of aim is just above the waistline of the target. This allows for maximum coverage with the net. The net is weighted with eight rubber-coated metal cones on the net's circumference. The net does not have to drop fully over the suspect and fall to the ground for it to be effective. Some of the best results were achieved when the net went over the hips and head, with the weights continuing to pull the net forward. This totally wrapped up the subject and resulted in an excellent tangled web. In testing, the suspect's mobility was greatly reduced, but there was still a certain amount of danger from a netted suspect with a knife. Other less-lethal options may be used to secure the knife. The Super Talon is a reasonable choice for many SWAT teams and sergeant or supervisor vehicles. Other uses may be found in corrections-jail operations and in riot control and animal control.
