This paper assesses the supervision needs of correctional mental health counselors and psychologists and proposes a model for supervision for correctional psychology.
Abstract
Psychological and behavioral problems encountered by correctional mental health staff cover a wide range including parole decisions, inmate misconduct reviews, and inmate classification, as well as therapy involving hard confrontations, detailing current life-styles, combining incarcerations with therapy, and coping with prison structure. The developmental model of Stoltenberg and Delworth is described as a way to cope with these problems. In this supervision model, the supervisor's progress through three levels in their training as counselors: support, training, and development. The model can serve as an effective method of stress management for both the correctional mental health counselors and their inmate clients, in contrast to a more confrontational supervision style. 13 references
