Seventeen chapters provide instruction in the philosophies, techniques, and procedures for performing various aspects of the supervision of police personnel.
Abstract
The first chapter discusses the police supervisor's role, with attention to the nature of the position, women supervisors, technical and supervisory competence, organizational knowledge, and basic supervisory responsibilities. This is followed by a chapter on the supervisor's function in organization, administration, and management. Some topics in this chapter are administrative functions, basic organizational structures, division of work, unity of command, and delegation. Aspects of leadership, supervision, and command presence are addressed in another chapter, followed by a chapter on interpersonal communications that encompasses communications processes, barriers, and communications methods. A chapter on principles of interviewing is followed by one that focuses on some psychological aspects of supervision. A discussion of special problems in personnel counseling and remediation encompasses problem-drinking and emotional and personal problems. Remaining chapters discuss employee dissatisfaction, grievances, and complaints; discipline principles, policies, and practices; personnel complaint investigation procedures and techniques; personnel evaluation systems; performance rating standards and methods; distribution and deployment of field forces; tactical deployment of field forces; the training function; the instructional process; and conference leading. 115 references and a subject index
