This volume presents practical guidelines for the community supervision of sex offenders, based on the more than 40 years the authors have worked in probation and parole.
Abstract
The text is intended for probation and parole officers, as well as other correctional personnel, treatment agencies, training programs, judges, attorneys, police, and elected officials. The discussion reflects awareness that traditional supervision strategies are ineffective for sex offenders and presents practical examples to demonstrate that appropriately assessed sex offenders can be supervised in the community and can change their behavior. Individual sections describe methods for helping correctional personnel and treatment providers determine whether a sex offender is appropriate for probation and community treatment or requires incarceration with possible later parole, supervision, and treatment. Other sections outline pre-sentence investigations, briefly review theories of offending and typologies of offender, describe risk assessment and treatment, and discuss confidentiality and public disclosure. They also describe ways that a supervision network involving members of the offender's community can help an offender abstain from abuse and thereby effectively ensure public safety. Further sections explain typical cues to help probation supervisors recognize when an offender is continuing sexually abusive behavior.
