This volume presents summaries of 11 United States Supreme Court decisions regarding juvenile and family law; the cases were decided during the 1988-90 terms.
Abstract
Issues decided in these cases included a parent's use of the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination to resist a juvenile court's order to produced an abused child, the use of a screen between a criminal defendant and a child victim who is testifying in court, and the liability of child protective services to protect a child from abuse inflicted by the father. Other cases involved a 48-hour waiting period for a minor who had notified a parent of her intent to obtain an abortion, hearsay statements by children regarding child sexual abuse, the use of closed-circuit television for child witnesses, parental notification regarding an abortion, and the private possession and viewing of child pornography. Other cases involved capital punishment of mentally retarded persons and the execution of a juvenile murderer.
