Abstract
DURING THE 1900'S LEGISLATION WAS ENACTED WHICH ESTABLISHED JUVENILE COURTS FOR THE CARE, GUIDANCE, AND CONTROL OF CHILDREN. NUMEROUS SUPREME COURT RULINGS ON JUVENILE LAW AND PROCEDURE ENSUED. SUPREME COURT DECISIONS FOR THE PERIOD 1923-1972 ARE COVERED WITH SUPPLEMENT THROUGH MARCH 1973. THE CASES RANGE FROM MEYER V. NEBRASKA 262 U.S. 390 (1923), WHICH OVERRULED A STATUTE FORBIDDING THE TEACHING OF LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH UNTIL EIGHTH GRADE, TO IN RE GAULT 387 U.S. 1, (1967) WHICH INCORPORATED ESCOBEDO AND MIRANDA INTO JUVENILE COURT PHILOSOPHY. LATER DECISIONS INCLUDE KIRBY V. ILLINOIS 406 U.S. 682 (1972), CONCERNING THE RIGHT TO COUNSEL AT PRE-INDICTMENT LINE-UPS, AND GOMEZ V. PERES 35 L. ED. 2D 56 (1973), WHICH SAID THAT A STATE MAY NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST ILLEGITIMATE CHILDREN BY DENYING THEM SUBSTANTIAL BENEFITS ACCORDED CHILDREN GENERALLY.
