This article identifies and describes Australian Internet sites that provide linkages to agencies and other Internet resources in Australia, with the aim to identify key sites to enable research, data access, and contacts in the pursuit of information on crime prevention and community safety in Australia.
Abstract
This article provides information on how to access general information and establish links via the Internet with Australian researchers, recommending the Australian Institute of Criminology Homepage as a best starting point. Further sites are given for accessing a database of researchers based on research interests, obtaining access to data and analysis, locating publications within the broad domain of criminology, and finding data on police, drugs, corrections, juveniles, and more. Also, the location of information on the topic of restorative justice is referenced. Key policing agencies are listed by web address, and a discussion on the lack of research material available on policing sites, including critical reports on policing, is included. This report examines several key research agencies for the different Australian States, and also university sites that provide access to research reports and links to non-government sites. Finally, starting points for eliciting information on print media and Internet-based alternative or independent media are provided. In conclusion it is noted that the Crime Net in Australia is undergoing considerable development but is threatened by the increasing pressure for government sites to charge for access to their records. It is emphasized that free public access to electronic archives is essential to promoting the growth of the information revolution.
