THIS REPORT DETAILS FINDINGS OF A SURVEY OF DRINKING HABITS OF 482 YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WERE CLIENTS AT 17 RUNAWAY CENTERS NATIONWIDE DURING A SIX MONTH PERIOD IN 1975.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS DESIGNED TO TEST TWO HYPOTHESES: 1) THAT RUNAWAYS ARE MORE LIKELY TO ABUSE ALCOHOL THAN THE GENERAL POPULATION OF ADOLESCENTS, AND 2) THAT THERE IS A POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN ADOLESCENT AND PARENTAL ALCOHOL ABUSE IN THE RUNAWAY POPULATION. THE RESEARCHERS REPORT THAT MORE THAN HALF OF THE RUNAWAYS STATED THAT THEY WERE HEAVY DRINKERS. THE SECOND HYPOTHESIS WAS NOT CONFIRMED BY THIS SURVEY. THE REPORT INCLUDES A SUMMARY OF THE LITERATURE REGARDING ADOLESCENT RUNAWAYS, AS WELL AS A DISCUSSION OF THE ALCOHOL USE SURVEY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
