This study assesses the 4-member Gordonsville (VA) Police Department, making recommendations consistent with the Standards for Law Enforcement Agencies, developed by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).
Abstract
Few published sources provide guidance for evaluating a police department as small as Gordonsville. The areas evaluated in the study include salaries, equipment and facilities, cooperative agreements with county governments, records and forms, use of force, community/race relations, administrative and operational discretion, patrol operations, and crime prevention. Recommendations include upgrading the building and facilities of the police department, purchasing body armor for all officers involved in patrol work, and developing a comprehensive policy on the collection, labeling and preservation of evidence. Appendixes include questionnaires used in the study and sample cooperative agreements. 12 references.
