Questionnaires have been developed for use in North Carolina, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Louisiana to survey opinions on crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system and to gauge crime victimization.
Abstract
The North Carolina questionnaire contains items on public attitudes toward crime and on security measures, and a portion of the questionnaire focuses on violent crime. The West Virginia questionnaire primarily deals with crime victimization and asks questions about crime problems, neighborhood safety, security measures, and public attitudes toward police and courts. The West Virginia questionnaire also asks respondents to report their victimization according to specific crime types. The Tennessee questionnaire is designed to survey crime and justice by asking questions on punishment, fear of crime, criminal justice system effectiveness, crime events during the past year and over the individual's lifetime, public attitudes toward crime, juvenile issues, and child abuse issues. The Louisiana questionnaire contains items on public attitudes toward crime and criminals, neighborhood safety, fear of crime, security measures, drug abuse, police effectiveness, and gangs.
