Recent research findings on drug education programs in America are presented.
Abstract
An analysis of the effectiveness of drug education programs have consistently reached the same set of conclusions. First, relative to the many programs that have been developed, little evidence exists about the effectiveness of such programs. Second, most drug education evaluations have lacked careful methodological analysis. Third, there is no consistent evidence that drug education programs reduce or increase the incidence of drug use. And finally, the more recent programs that have focused on the development of personal and resistance skills offer promising results. The more effective programs, like DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) and SAP (Student Assistance Program), emphasize intervention strategies. Drug education programs require interagency collaboration among schools, communities, and families. 21 references (Author abstract modified)
