A forensic science laboratory in Northern Ireland reports on the distribution of glass fragments found in 432 items of clothing examined over a 2-year period.
Abstract
Physical measurements were made on the fragments including refractive index (RI), or density determination, and surface measurements. A computer program was used to group the RI data by sources of glass. The survey results indicated that whenever seven or more fragments of glass were located on clothing, they had originated from at least 13 different sources. The largest number of glass fragments from a single source located on the same item of clothing was six. The authors note that residents of Northern Ireland may be subjected to a high exposure of broken glass because of the rapid rate of housing redevelopment and the sustained terrorist bombing campaign occurring there. Future research will analyze the compositional data of the fragments. 1 table, 9 figures, and 13 references
