THIS SURVEY OF THE AVAILABILITY OF FORMAL EDUCATION IN THE FORENSIC SCIENCES RESULTED IN THREE ROSTERS OF COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES - FORENSIC SCIENCE, FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY, AND FORENSIC/PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY.
Abstract
THE OFFICES OF MEDICAL EXAMINERS IN SOME JURISDICTIONS ALSO PROVIDE EDUCATION IN FORENSIC SCIENCES. THE SURVEY FOUND THAT COMPREHENSIVE, DEGREE ORIENTED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN THE VARIOUS DISCIPLINES OF THE FORENSIC SCIENCES ARE EXTREMELY RARE. MANY OF THE COURSES OFFERED ARE ON AN INTRODUCTORY OR SURVEY LEVEL, DESIGNED TO GIVE LAW ENFORCEMENT STUDENTS AND OFFICIALS AN OVERVIEW OF THE FORENSIC SCIENCES RATHER THAN TO PREPARE INDIVIDUALS FOR ENTRY INTO THE FIELD. ADVANCED DEGREE PROGRAMS IN FORENSIC/ANALYTICAL TOXICOLOGY ARE FEW. EDUCATIONAL OFFERINGS IN PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY ARE SPARSE WITH EDUCATION IN FORENSIC ANTHOROPOLOGY VIRTUALLY NON-EXISTENT. THE FIRST ROSTER ENCOMPASSES THE LAST TWO, AND LISTS THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE IN CRIMINALISTICS/GENERAL FORENSIC SCIENCE, FORENSIC ODONTOLOGY, FORENSIC PATHOLOGY, FORENSIC PSYCHIATRY, FORENSIC/ANALYTICAL TOXICOLOGY, FORENSIC/PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, JURISPRUDENCE, AND QUESTIONED DOCUMENT EXAMINATION. THE ROSTER PROVIDES THE NAME OF THE INSTITUTION, ITS ADDRESS, THE COURSES OFFERED, AND INFORMATION PERTAINING TO DEGREES.
