This paper describes a survey on characteristics of child sexual abuse victims involved in the first 5 years' work of a specialized National Health Service Child Sexual Abuse Team (CSAT) in the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland; the CSAT provides a post-disclosure treatment service to youths ages 13-19 years.
Abstract
The materials emphasize that abuse can happen to anyone and describe the five types of abuse emotional/mental abuse, economic abuse, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, and physical abuse. The text also explains the actions that represent a respectful and loving relationship, signs of an unhealthy relationship, techniques for talking to a victim of dating violence or date rape, and techniques for talking to a perpetrator of dating violence or date rape. Further sections provide guidelines for a relationship contract, explain the effects of violence on teenagers, present guidelines for responsible sexuality, discuss violence against women, explain restraining orders, and give an overview of abuse of the elderly. The brochures and manual emphasize that violence is learned behavior, violence is a choice, and most violence occurs among people who know each other Figures, checklists, and lists of national and Massachusetts resource organizations, and description of the youth-led service project Teens Against Domestic Violence
