RESULTS OF A SURVEY ON CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THE FAMILY BACKGROUNDS OF A GROUP OF PRISONERS ADMITTED TO A LARGE LONDON PRISON DURING THE PERIOD FROM FEBRUARY 7 TO MAY 30, 1973.
Abstract
THE SAMPLE GROUP CONSISTED OF ABOUT 100 MALE PRISONERS OVER THE AGE OF 21 WHO HAD BEEN SENTENCED FOR TERMS OF IMPRISONMENT FROM 1 TO 4 YEARS FOR CRIMINAL OFFENSES BY THE COURTS OF GREATER LONDON, ESSEX, HERTFORDSHIRE, SURREY, AND SUSSEX. THOSE WHO HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY SERVED A PRISON SENTENCE WERE NOT INCLUDED. DATA CONCERNING PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS, HEIGHT, AND WEIGHT WERE OBTAINED FROM OFFICIAL RECORDS; ALL OTHER DATA WERE TAKEN FROM RESPONSES TO A STANDARD QUESTIONNAIRE AS WELL AS INFORMATION VOLUNTEERED BY PRISONERS DURING INTERVIEWS. A HIGH CORRELATION BETWEEN DELINQUENCY AND BROKEN HOMES WAS FOUND.
