NARRATIVE AND TABULAR PRESENTATION OF RESULTS OF A PUBLIC OPINION SURVEY CONCERNED WITH SOCIAL CONDITIONS, SOCIAL PROBLEMS, AND ORGANIZED ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE THEM.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS CARRIED OUT BY FACE-TO-FACE PERSONAL INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED IN RESPONDENTS' HOMES BY SKILLED AND TRAINED INTERVIEWERS. HOUSEHOLDS TO BE CONTACTED WERE SELECTED ON A RANDOM BASIS. THE FIELDWORK FOR THE SURVEY WAS CONDUCTED IN LATE DECEMBER OF 1972 AND EARLY JANUARY OF 1973. THE SURVEY COVERED SUCH TOPICS AS THE PUBLIC'S PERCEPTION OF THE SOCIAL CLIMATE, THE SERIOUSNESS OF CRIME IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD, THE PROBLEM OF DRUG ABUSE, AND ATTITUDES TOWARD JUVENILE DELINQUENCY. THE SERIOUSNESS OF VARIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS SUCH AS POLLUTION, POVERTY, AND RACIAL DISCRIMINATION ARE ALSO TREATED. THE ATTITUDES OF PORTLAND CITIZENS REGARDING THE EFFORTS OF THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT, COURT, AND CORRECTIONAL SYSTEMS ARE INDICATED.
