This study examined the validity of using the Backster numerical scoring system for You-Phase exams.
Abstract
The primary finding from this study supported the hypothesis that Backster numerical scores of confirmed You-Phase examinations would be able to differentiate deception from truth-telling at rates that were significantly greater than mere chance. The study also found that demographic variables of the examiners had no significant effect on the accuracy of their scoring, leading to the implication that less experienced examiners were able to make good use of their training in order to reach accurate conclusions. The primary objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the Backster numerical scoring system for use in You-Phase examinations. Data for the study were obtained from a sample of You-Phase examinations conducted by seven examiners trained at the Backster School of Lie Detection between 1981 and 2011. All examiners were of various ages with varying levels of education and experience. Eleven examinations that were confirmed as truthful were selected for analyses by the authors. The analyses found that the Backster numerical scoring method used by the examiners produced a level of accuracy at determining truthfulness that was greater than mere chance. This finding supports the use of the Backster method in You-Phase examinations. Study limitations are discussed. Tables, references, and appendix
