Abstract
S.P.E.A.R. stands for Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response, a protective, reactive offense and a combat style based on human behavior regarding the fast reaction of the flinch. It converts the body’s various flinches into focused self-defense tactics. Law enforcement trainers view this technique as increasing an officer’s chances of survivability. Normal control tactics are seen as only working on those people who passively resist when the officer is in control. S.P.E.A.R. is seen as the missing link in other forms of police training and is a tool for the officer to use when other forms of response simply won’t work. Specifics regarding utilization of the S.P.E.A.R. technique are discussed.
