Abstract
Part 1 provides information on child sexual abuse, including its features, why many children remain silent about it, some of the adverse effects on a survivor's life, how these effects can be minimized, and the characteristics of the offenders and their methods for "grooming" and silencing their child victims. Part 2 focuses on helping survivors of childhood sexual abuse to understand their victimization and continue to deal constructively with their distinctive experiences of childhood sexual abuse. Helping concepts and healing exercises are provided, along with stories shared by men and women who have found ways to deal constructively with their childhood sexual abuse. Part 3 of the book is specifically for supporters and caregivers of survivors. One of the chapters in part 3 focuses on the role of the main caregiver of the child at whatever age. The chapter advises that the caregiver may first need help in addressing his/her own shock and confusion about the abuse before he/she is capable of providing positive support for the child. Guidance is provided on positive ways to react to a child's disclosure and how best to support the child through listening, encouragement, and expressions of love. Some obstacles caregivers may face in preparing to help their child are identified and addressed. A second chapter in part 3 is written mainly for people who are in a long-term relationship with a survivor. It provides information about the nature and adverse impact of childhood sexual abuse and suggests ways of helping the victimized partner to cope positively as a survivor. Extensive resources and a bibliography as well as appendixes with supplementary guidance
