The Swedish Prison and Probation Administration's statistics and policies for the year 1988 are presented. Overall numbers include the enforcement of approximately 16,000 sentences for imprisonment and 6,500 sentences for probation. The policies involve staffing considerations and training.
Abstract
The main points of the annual presentation are the organization of the prison system in Sweden, the results of the Director-General's survey which discusses the changes due to decentralization and delegation of decision-making power, the actual workings of the prisons and the conditions therein, the number of prisoners received by type of offense, HV/AIDS effect on the Administration's work, and probation and after-care work. The final section discusses the actual administration statistics of maintaining the system of prisons, non-institutional situations, and probation services. The average cost per prisoner and per supervised probationer or parolee are also presented as well as the income generated from prison industries and how it was used to offset costs.
