This article reviews two reports by the Research and Documentation Center (RDC) of the Dutch Justice Department regarding what works in combating organized crime.
Abstract
Empirical research on what works in combating organized crime is scarce. Two recent RDC reports, however, provide additional information on this matter. The first report resulted from the RDC's monitoring of organized crime in the Netherlands. It describes how members of criminal associations cooperate and interact with their social environment. The second report evaluates the effectiveness of undercover policing in the Netherlands. This article summarizes the main conclusions of these two reports, and the authors then explain the relevance of these conclusions to the issue of how to combat organized crime in the Netherlands. 9 references
