Florida State Prison's confinement education program offers segregated inmates closed-circuit television courses in basic reading, arithmetic, English, and social studies to help them prepare for vocational training and high school diplomas.
Abstract
All inmates who have been in the program state that it has helped them learn to enjoy school and better accept incarceration. This acceptance has helped stabilize the environment. In addition, the program has instilled hope for the future in many inmates and has reinforced the value of self-improvement. The program is effective because it provides a sharp and positive contrast to the negative experiences most inmates had in public schools. By letting inmates work at their own pace, the program permits them to succeed and provides them with a sense of accomplishment in their lives.
