This film portrays the emotional reaction of women to attack and emphasizes that all women can learn to defend themselves.
Abstract
All women, especially the elderly and the alone, feel the threat of violence and are aware of it on an almost daily basis. A self-defense training program does more than just instruct women in the techniques necessary for self protection. Women have reported that class participation alleviates deep feelings of fear and anger, improves their self perception and image, yields an awareness that they are not confined to roles not of their choosing, and gives them a feeling of inner strength and the ability to control their own space. Some of the portrayed women expressed doubts and feelings of failure related to the start of the training but indicated afterwards they were able to learn a lot about themselves. The class methodology focuses on determination, will, standing up for oneself, and not giving up.
