Abstract
This document was developed as a companion guide to Preventing Youth Violence: Opportunities for Action. This companion guide provides information to help communities learn more about the causes and impact of youth violence. The guide has six main sections that offer information on the problem of youth violence: Understanding Youth Violence, Youth Violence is a Huge Problem, Youth Violence Harms Us All, Why Does Youth Violence Happen?, Actions You Can Take Today, Learn More, and Seize the Opportunity - Take Responsibility for Preventing Youth Violence. Examples of youth violence prevention approaches that are discussed in this guide include universal school-based youth violence prevention programs, parenting skill and family relationship approaches, intensive family-focused approaches, and early childhood education. Suggestions to community leaders for preventing youth violence include becoming a mentor, supporting health development of all young people, taking immediate action when youth violence occurs, insisting on the use of evidence-based prevention approaches to youth violence, and seeking out and using existing resources to learn more about effective youth violence prevention activities. Additional information is provided for public health professionals, families, caregivers, and adults who work with youth. 9 references
