This article discusses technological advancements in law enforcement records management systems (RMS) capabilities.
Abstract
The two most important facets of law enforcement RMS are data acquisition and retrieval. In addition, there is a need to improve accuracy and reliability of records, eliminate duplication of effort, and integrate computed-aided dispatch and RMS. The biggest trend in records management is that police departments want more information from a variety of sources, and they want an easy way to find it. Selecting the appropriate records tracking software can address these issues. Several RMS software programs currently available as well as trends in the field are described in this article. The benefits of an enhanced RMS system and funding opportunities and sources available through State and Federal grants are provided. The foundation for the RMS is a single, integrated database.
