This article presents a detailed analysis of motor vehicle theft in Slovenia.
Abstract
The author analyzed crime data concerning motor vehicle theft in Slovenia. The study data was for the period beginning in November 1999 and ended in September 2000. During that period, an average of two vehicles per day were stolen in Slovenia. The majority of the cars stolen were less expensive models and were typically stolen from larger cities. Most thefts occurred at night during the week and in parking spaces near apartment buildings. Common methods of auto theft and the impact of security devices is discussed. When more expensive cars are stolen in Slovenia, they are typically smuggled out of the country. Additionally, there is a smuggling route through Slovenia for expensive cars stolen in Italy. Less expensive cars were stolen by individuals and local gangs, more expensive care were usually stolen by criminal groups, and luxury vehicles were likely to be stolen by members of international criminal organizations. 23 Tables, 3 notes
