THIS REPORT ON A WISCONSIN PROJECT TO DEVELOP LAW-RELATED COURSES IN ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS EMPHASIZES COOPERATION BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND LISTS IMPORTANT BOOK AND OTHER RESOURCES.
Abstract
THE LAW-RELATED EDUCATION PROJECT BEGAN IN 1977 AND CHOSE 10 INTERESTED ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS TO DEVELOP AND OFFER PILOT COURSES. COMMUNITY TEAMS FROM EACH SCHOOL JURISDICTION MET WITH TEACHERS TO OFFER SUPPORT AND EXCHANGE IDEAS. TEAMS CONSISTED OF AN ATTORNEY, REPRESENTATIVES FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT, JUVENILE COURT, AND SOCIAL SERVICES, A BUSINESSMAN, AND STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES. THIS REPORT DESCRIBES THE TEAM APPROACH AND DISCUSSES MATERIALS FOR LAW-RELATED EDUCATION. BOOKS, SPEAKERS, AND USEFUL FIELD TRIPS ARE SUGGESTED. INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN ON HOW TO USE GUEST SPEAKERS. QUESTIONS TO BE DISCUSSED AT INITIAL TEACHER-TEAM MEETINGS ARE DETAILED TO INCLUDE WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LAW-ENFORCEMENT AND THE U.S. LEGAL SYSTEM, WHICH PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY BEST UNDERSTAND HOW THE LEGAL SYSTEM WORKS, AND WHAT IS THE PURPOSE LAW-RELATED EDUCATION HAS. THE APPROACH REQUIRES THAT AS TEACHERS DEVELOP THEIR CURRICULUMS, THEY MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH THE COMMUNITY TEAM AND EVALUATE THE COURSE JOINTLY WITH TEAM MEMBERS. PILOT COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FROM SOME OF THE PARTICIPATING JUNIOR AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS ARE ALSO GIVEN. (PAP)
