This article discussed the use of the team approach in conducting rape investigations with particular focus on the Monmouth County, New Jersey sexual assault response team (SART).
Abstract
Rape investigations are viewed as one of the most difficult for law enforcement personnel. The investigation can be both challenging and problematic due to the trauma suffered by the victim/survivor. One method that is seen as achieving success nationwide is the team approach. With the team approach the needs of the rape victim take priority over the needs of law enforcement. This article presented the utilization of this approach through Monmouth County, New Jersey's sexual assault response team (SART). The SART team is activated when the Women's Center is notified of an assault. The team approach makes sure that the victim is taken care of and that the responsibilities are clearly delineated. However, using the team approach can be different and challenging for law enforcement. It means giving up some of the control. The victim/survivor team approach typically results in better investigations, more closed cases, and a better overall outcome.
