A HIERARCHIC MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE, WITH BOSSES WHO CONTROL EVERYTHING AND DEMAND COMPLETE OBEDIENCE, IS NOT FLEXIBLE ENOUGH TO BE USED IN CORRECTIONS WORK AIMED AT ACHIEVING RESOCIALIZATION OF INMATES.
Abstract
SUCH WORK REQUIRES TEAMWORK, A FLEXIBLE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE AND PEOPLE WHO CAN ADJUST TO EACH OTHER AND TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE JOB TO BE DONE. A TEAM WORKING WITH INMATES SHOULD HAVE FROM FIVE TO TEN MEMBERS - NOT MORE. THE INSTITUTIONAL DIRECTOR SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO VETO TEAM DECISIONS THAT SERIOUSLY AFFECT THE LIFE OF THE PRISON. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THE HIGHER CORRECTIONS AUTHORITIES TO BECOME INVOLVED IN THE WORK OF THE REHABILITATION TEAMS, BUT AS COOPERATING PARTNERS RATHER THAN AS AUTHORITATIVE, UNSWERVING GIVERS OF ORDERS. --IN GERMAN
