This winter 2013 edition of TechBeat from the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center contains six articles detailing new ways for law enforcement to improve public safety. This newsmagazine is published quarterly and includes up-to-date information on new technologies and research efforts aimed at improving public safety. The first article describes how inmates in New Jersey are using Facebook to provide anonymous tips to law enforcement personnel. The second article discusses a new system implemented in Niagara County, NY, that is used to track repeat offenders. The third article discusses a manual developed by the Electronic Crime Technology Center for Excellence that contains policies and procedures for handling digital evidence. The fourth article discusses new technology that allows for virtual crime scene investigator training. The fifth article describes how smartphone apps can provide an alternative way for students to communicate with police.
