This National Institute of Corrections' (NIC's) annual service plan for fiscal year 2009 (begins on October 1, 2007) presents NIC's training programs, technical assistance opportunities, and information services for correctional executives and practitioners who work in all corrections disciplines in Federal, State, and local adult correctional agencies.
Abstract
NIC's programs are designed to assist jail, prison, and community corrections agencies and practitioners in managing their operations and the offenders under their care. The programs promote correctional policies that maximize safety for staff and offenders, enhance organization and professional performance, and reduce the risk offenders pose to the public. In the category of leadership and management, the training programs described address executive excellence, executive leadership for women, correctional leadership development, correctional leadership for women, management development for the future, and management development for women and minorities. NIC resources for leadership and management are also described. An NIC regional training initiative and NIC resources are described for helping agencies build capacity for training. Training programs for addressing sexual misconduct in correctional settings cover the investigation of allegations of staff sexual misconduct with offenders and responding to inmate-on-inmate sexual violence. Information is also provided on NIC technical assistance for dealing with staff sexual misconduct. Training programs and resources are described for offender workforce development, women offenders, and correctional health care. Training, technical assistance, and resources tailored to jail programs and services focus on jail administration, inmate behavioral management, planning for a new jail, jail standards and inspections, and jail mental health services. NIC training programs, technical assistance, and resources for prison programs and services cover leadership and management, prison management and operations, and correctional health care. NIC training and resources for community corrections programs and services address executive leadership and management, effective offender management in the community, and management and operations.
